From American Drum School
It was 1970 and I was 17 years old. My drum teacher took me to see the Buddy Rich Big Band. Buddy was playing Slingerland drums at that time. It was great! My teacher approached Buddy and asked him for a pair of sticks for his student (me). I was thrilled when I got those sticks. Then I did something very stupid. I used the sticks and loved them and played them until one of them broke. What happened to them next I can't even remember. But I never forgot how much I liked using them.
Fast Forward a few years. I was curious when a well known drum stick company introduced the Buddy Rich model. I tried them and realized that these sticks were nothing like the pair I got from Buddy. They were much heavier and thicker. The bead wasn't the same..
Fast Forward again. About 30 years after I got those sticks from Buddy, I started looking at eBay auctions. I got very excited when I saw a pair of the original Buddy Rich sticks with the Slingerland name on them. I think they sold for about 0! I knew they were the real thing and I kept looking at auctions. I saw them a couple of more times but was never able to get them.
I was having a custom stick made by a stick manufacturer and I was talking to the owner when he mentioned that they had made sticks for Slingerland. I asked him if they had made Buddy's sticks and he confirmed that they did. He also said they still had them available!
I immediately order a pair and when they arrived I knew they were the original! I sold all 100+ pairs of them and that was it.
I found another manufacturer (XCEL drumsticks) that is making an exact copy of the original Buddy Rich stick. See photos! I can now offer them at a lower price and still include the FREE Buddy photo! (the BR photo in color is a good shot of the stick he used)
