Description
Vintage Wim Muhlendyck Salt Glazed Lidded SteinA beautiful stylized design of Dutch tulips with incised (sgraffito) detailing is the focal image on this rare imported stein. The glaze colors are deep cobalt blue, light brown, and “gunmetal” brown with a gray salt glaze finish. Domed pewter lid with thumblift is nicely patinated, and the inside of the lid is lighter than the outside. Inside the jug, one can see the potter’s pulling marks from the hand-throwing process.
Measurements:
8 3/4” to top of thumb lift; 7 1/2” tall pottery vessel; 4” diameter bottom; 3 1/8” diameter top
Markings:
Hand incised marks on the base: “Made in West Germany” and “414B” and Muhlendyck’s stylized windmill / mill wings studio logo. (A stein marked as made in Western Germany indicates it was made between 1949 and 1990, or in this case, the 1949-1970s.) The lid is unmarked.
